Plenty of people dream of starting a small business where they can sell handmade items and crafts of their own without the expensive overhead of paying for a storefront each month. Others would just like to make money on the side. The best way of skirting commercial rent is to sell your wares online, either by building your own website or setting up shop with a site like Etsy, which hosts sellers in the hundreds of thousands offering their handmade items. Selling handmade goods online is also a great way of expanding your customer base, as you can sell to anyone in the nation, not just those who happen upon a physical store.
Whether you want to make money selling handmade jewelry, art, clothing, soaps, pottery or quilts, or something else entirely, we’ll discuss a few ways you can sell handmade items online through already established marketplace websites.
1. Etsy
Etsy is a popular website that allows sellers to sell three categories of items: handmade items, commercial and handmade crafting supplies and vintage items more than 20 years old. To sell handmade goods on Etsy, you must first register for an Etsy account, choosing a username that will represent the name of your shop. Once you’ve opened an account, you must upgrade that account to seller status. You can learn more about setting up a shop with Etsy here. Etsy will charge you 20 cents for every item you list for four months. Once you’ve made a sale, Etsy gets to keep 3.5 percent of the profits, not counting shipping.
2. Bonanza
You can also sell handmade items by setting up a booth on Bonanza. You will need to add the items you have for sale to your Bonanza booth and create a seller account, according to Bonanza’s instructions for setting up a booth. Unlike Etsy, Bonanza does not assess a fee to list items no matter how long they are listed, and only collects a fee when you actually sell an item. The fee rises depending on how large your sale is; you can learn more about Bonanza’s fees here.
3. ArtFire
ArtFire is yet another online marketplace where you can sell your handmade creations. To sell items on ArtFire, you pay a monthly fee of $9.95 per month to maintain a Pro Account, but you can post an unlimited number of listings and get to keep all of your profits. However, you can also open a basic account with ArtFire and sell your handmade goods for free. The only drawback to the free account is you don’t have access to many of the tools to help you get the word out about the items you’re selling, such as the ability to create an artisan blog. You can learn more about being a seller on ArtFire here in the Frequently Asked Questions section pertaining to Selling.
These are only three sites dedicated to helping individuals sell their handmade goods, and there are certainly many others. However, these are a great place to start, especially if you want to see how popular your items are on the Web. Take a look at the fee structures of each option and evaluate how using one of these three sites could help you on your way to making money selling your handmade goods online.

Just a little update, ArtFire no longer offers the Basic plan for free.
They have a free 30 day trial but after that you’ll need to pay the Pro fees.
I just inquired after reading your post.
There is another purely handmade venue on the block you might want to check out. The HAFshop does not allow commercial or mass produced items.
Thanks and hope you stop by and check us out.
